Project Description
Peggy Worthenger from Waukesha called Totally Clean because they were experiencing severe allergies and dust when the furnace kicked on in the winter. With Wisconsin being known for its cold and dry winters, the Worthenger family was suffering from severe allergies due to the high levels of contamination in their ductwork.
Their home was built in the 1930s, and the ducts were only cleaned once before they moved in 10 years ago. Since then, they have raised children and pets in this home located near N. Grand Ave & E. Park Ave. Pets and children tend to put objects where they don’t belong, and in this case, a lot of toys, dog food, and pet dander were present in the HVAC system.
Upon inspection, we found a very high level of pet hair, dust, and pet food in their ducts. It also appeared that the last company that cleaned the vents in this 2300-square-foot home also cut some corners. The ducting shouldn’t have been this dirty after 10 years, and the relics we also found shouldn’t have been there after the last cleaning.
Project Challenges
Since the home was built in the 1930s, the air ducts were covered in asbestos, and we had to find parts of the ducting that didn’t have asbestos so we didn’t disturb it. The other challenge was fishing out large chunks of plaster from the return vents and the difficulty working in a closet in which the furnace was located.

This air duct cleaning job took us 3 1/2 hours to complete from start to finish. Usually, we would have cleaned these ducts quicker, but this home presented some challenges. We took multiple before & after pictures of this duct cleaning job, and the customer was thrilled. After we were done, the supply and return vents were spotless, and we removed a ton of dust and pet hair. Peggy even let us keep some of the incredible relics we found inside the vent since we like to collect vintage-era objects.
Once the job was complete, we packed up our duct cleaning equipment and changed out the furnace filter. Peggy stated that she had already noticed a difference in the smell of her home and the dust floating around the air. The air quality and Worthenger’s allergies significantly improved.
